A large asteroid just zipped between Earth and the Moon Astronomers missed the asteroid until it was nearly on top of them, but the space rock has already passed harmlessly by. An unexpected asteroid named 2019 OK just flew between Earth and the Moon, hammering home the need for continued improvements in both finding and tracking potentially hazardous asteroids. The closest it came to Earth was just under 45,000 miles (72,500 km), a safe distance, but still much less than the distance between the Earth and Moon. Astronomers only noticed the space rock within the past few days, when astronomers at SONEAR Observatory in Brazil picked it up. Volunteer divers just pulled 3200 pounds of garbage off the ocean floor of Florida’s Deerfield Beach. Imagine if we had cleanup efforts like this all over the world! The waters around Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier are a lot cleaner after 633 divers spent just two hours scouring the ocean floor for garbage. All together they removed an  estimated 3200 pounds  – more than one and a half tons – of trash. That included 1,600 pounds of lead fishing weights and 60 pounds of fishing line, diver RJ Harper told the  South Florida Sun-Sentinel . The rest still needs to be sorted and weighed. It was the 15th cleanup of its kind on this beach, but the first time it had set a record. Last year’s annual cleanup removed 1,000 pounds of lead weights, 161 pounds of fishing line, 104 pounds of metal, 52 pounds of wood, and 102 pounds of miscellaneous debris, totalling more than 1,400 pounds The previous world record was set by 614 divers cleaning up trash from the floo

This modern fairytale inspires hope. It sounds like a fairytale or maybe the plot of a Charles Dickens novel — but it’s a true story. It began when Víctor Martín Angulo Córdova, an 11-year-old boy from Moche, Perú, caught the attention of the officers monitoring the city’s security cameras. A street camera captured video of the sixth grader sitting and lying down in the road under a streetlamp doing his homework. Soon the images and the backstory went public on news outlets and social media. As reported on the  Perfil website, Víctor’s family didn’t have electricity, but the boy was determined to get an education so he could grow up to be a police officer to “fight corruption, thieves, and drugs.” According to Perfil, the reason the family didn’t have electricity was twofold: a lack of money to pay the bills, and more importantly, the fact that they didn’t have documentation to prove the ownership of their home, which was needed for the contract to install electricity.

Something Is Heating Up Inside Egypt’s Ancient Pyramids and Scientists Can’t Explain It! Two weeks of new thermal scanning in Egypt’s Giza pyramids have  identified anomalies in the 4,500-year-old burial structures , including a major one in the largest pyramid, the Antiquities Ministry announced recently. The scanning showed “a particularly impressive one (anomaly) located on the Eastern side of the Khufu pyramid at ground level,” the ministry said in a statement. The largest of the three Giza pyramids is known locally as Khufu and internationally as Cheops. Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty and technical experts working on the project showed the higher temperature being detected in three specific adjacent stones at the bottom of the pyramid in a live thermal camera presentation to journalists.
